February 25, 2016

SBI’s Innovative Learning Week Festival There is no alternative! … Or is there? Exploring the tensions in alternative and sustainable business models, kicked off on Monday 15th February 2016.

Does the Circular Economy Spell the End of Fashion as we know it? Mark Shayler says Yes!

In collaboration with the Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS) and the Scottish Textiles Academic Group (STAG), SBI welcomed a very inspired guest lecture from Mark Shayler.

Wearing his flamboyant, colourful, repariable Dr. Martens – he posed the question of does the circular economy challenge the very nature of fashion and could it spell the end of fashion as we know it? He took the audience on his super hero journey and explored the most effective circular economy responses, why you should embrace them and how everybody has special powers to go forth and implement change! The ways of old are dying out and the new methods are infiltrating modern society. Mark Shayler has been disrupting businesses for 25 years and worked with leading clothing and fashion companies and it was a pleasure to listen to his creative ideas and forward-thinking perspectives.

The guest lecture was followed by a short presentation by Benjamin Thomas from the Made-By Organisation who discussed the various initiatives they adopt to make sustainable fashion common place.

The event was open to the public and took place at ECA who provided a great venue in the Hunter Building. It was wonderful to see 90 people in attendance on a typical windy and rainy Edinburgh evening.
